Downpour by ALRadeck Downpour by ALRadeck
Commission for thunder1 on FA of his character exploring giant glowing mushrooms and getting caught in one of the few downpours the desert gives.

So, it was kinda fun trying to think of a reasonable way this would exist. So let's say for the sake of argument that the mushroom's roots are extremely deep, tapped into an old riverbed that once ran through this canyon. The mushrooms themselves breed a micro-climate of temperate moist air, fueling nearby plants into production. But outside the mushroom's radius, things return back to sand. or cacti. During downpours like this, the mushrooms start loosening their nets to help grab any additional minerals needed.

Mushroom nets like that DO exist: [link] HOORAY FOR NATURE.

I haven't painted rain in years and years. I used part of a tutorial, but after deleting my 7th or 8th try, I meandered around and came up with a hybrid that worked. It was fun combining my biology background with this one :D

I want some-a-them shrooms.

I picture some final fantasy characters walking through here. Maybe a Moogle or two.

Maybe just moogles all over the place. Set up a hotel here, make it Moogle city, charge outrageous prices.

Hmmmmmm, lol

THOSE MUSHROOMS. . . Oh and suppose the well set atmosphere, rain effects, and the cliff wall that for some reason grabs my attention more than anything but the shrooms. Anyways fantabular work.

I like your attention to detail. However, the character didn't catch my attention at all. I initially thought this picture was just a fantasy-scape. Then I saw the raven/crow, and THEN the character. I think this could be because the brightest part of the picture is the glow of the mushrooms and I read it's motion as up, so I looked up. Maybe if you bumped up the ambient glow on the character it would make him a bit more noticeable. Especially since the mushroom seems to light up the plants around it fairly well. Regardless, I still like the piece.

I agree; i struggled a lot with trying to keep with the characters colors, which are a very deep, very rich ultramarine blue. There was a lot of push and pull on the character, just trying to get him to stand out, heh.

In general I think you could get away with being a little more aggressive with the ambient light on him since the rest of the picture is so dark and his own coloring also being dark. It may be like when you paint darker skin and the shadows aren't the source of contrast but the highlights are unlike in lighter skin. Assuming that made sense. lol

It made...sorta sense, lol. I get what you generally mean though, and I agree. I shall apply the knowledge to future works! :D

I haven't really seen a style like this before, it is very interesting and unique. I like how you put equal detail into the character and the actual scene.
